How To Win At Craps – Guide for Beginners

Craps is a very exciting and fast paced game which is very fun to play. At land based casinos you can always locate the craps tables, simply by following the cheers. There’s a lot of shouting and commotion around the tables, so you can easily get drawn into the euphoria.

Craps is also a game with a very low house edge, where some bets can bring you a hefty profit in the long run. But there are also a number of bets which have a very high house edge and can be devastating for your bankroll. So in order to win on craps you have to know which bets have the best odds of winning and which strategy to use in order to optimise your bankroll.

With this and a little luck on your side you can become a successful craps player and make hefty withdrawals at the casinos.  So before you start playing craps online, take a look at our simple beginners guide.

The Best Bets at a Craps Table

A lot of craps players are led by pure superstition when it comes to placing bets. Many will tell you that it’s best to bet on the shooter when he’s on a roll and take a pause when the shooter goes cold. This is mostly so because dice is a game of action. But in reality all you need to do is use the bets which have the lowest house edge. This way, regardless if the shooter is hot or cold, you will always have the best chance of winning.

So, let’s see what bets on the craps table offer the lowest house edge.

Pass Line and Come

Using these bets on the craps table is called right way betting. They have the lowest house edge and the best odds to win. At the same time, you are betting on the shooter and playing with the other players, so you are all in the game together.

The Pass Line bet has a house edge of only 1.41%. You will only lose if the shooter rolls a 2, 3 or 12 on the come out roll or if a seven is rolled out after the point number comes out. The Come Bet is very similar to the Pass Line bet. The only difference is that it’s made only after the point number comes out.

You will lose if the shooter rolls a 2, 3 or 12 and win if a 7 or 11 is rolled out. If any other number is rolled it becomes your own point number and is separate from the one on the table. This way you have more chances to win, which is the main reason why the Come bet is one of the most popular one on the craps table.

Don’t Pass and Don’t Come Bets

These bets offer pretty much the same odds and payouts as the previous ones. So in reality you can use them just the same as you would for the Pass Line and Come bets. But the only issue here is that you are betting against the table. When everyone else is winning you are losing and vice versa.

At land based casinos players tend to avoid these bets, as they’re believed to bring a bad mojo to the table. But you won’t have these problems at online casinos. If you feel that the craps land more often on the Don’t Pass and Don’t Come bets, then by all means use them. You will have the same chances of winning thanks to the low house edge, regardless of what other players at the table might think.

Field Bets

Field bets come with a house edge of 5.56%. As you can see this is considerably higher than the previous bets, but at the same time the payouts are higher. This bet is a one roll bet where you can bet only on the outcome of that one roll. You can bet on 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 and 12, but the best odds are on 2 and 2, paying 2:1 or 3:1 at some operators.

Aggressive betting

The craps table offers a variety of bets which you can use. Some of them have attractive payouts attached, but also come with a high casino edge. If you’re feeling lucky from time to time you can give them a try, but bear in mind that you can lose your entire bankroll pretty fast. Let’s see which are these bets.

Big 6 and Big 8

The house edge for these bets is 9.09%, while the payout is only 1:1.

Proposition bets

These bets are also known as one roll bets. The payouts on these bets can be as high as 30 to 1, but the house edge here is considerably higher compared to other bets. In this group you can find the Any Craps, Any 7, Any 11, Craps 11, Any 2 or 12 and Any 3 bets.
